Warm and Breezy Today, A Nice Weekend Ahead

The weekend is almost here and we are off to a really nice start. Today will be sunny, warm and breezy. High temperatures will range from the low 70s in Sioux Falls and across the southeast to the 60s along and west of the James Valley. There is a cold front that will be moving across the plains today and that’s why temperatures will be a bit cooler west of I-29. Wind gusts to between 25 and 35 mph are likely throughout the day. Gusts from 45 to 50 mph are possible across parts of southwestern Minnesota and northwestern Iowa later this morning through this afternoon. The wind will shift from the south to the northwest as the front passes.

Tomorrow will be sunny and not as windy with highs in the low to mid 60s. That’s a bit cooler than today, but still above average for this time of year.

A second front is looming and will bring more significant changes late Sunday into Monday. On Sunday before the front passes, it will be cloudy and windy with scattered showers. High temps will still climb into the upper 50s to low 60s on Sunday afternoon. On Monday after the front has passed, it will be cloudy, windy and much colder. Highs will only reach the upper 40s on Monday afternoon.

We will rebound a bit on Tuesday and Wednesday with another front bringing even colder air by Thursday. We’re talkin’ high temps in the low to mid 40s by late next week.

Warmer, Not Windy Today… Snow Later This Week

If you have outdoor stuff to do, you have about three days before some really big changes make things a little more difficult. It is true… Parts of our region will get snow later this week.

After a very windy weekend, things are going to calm down a bit as we start the week. Today will be mostly sunny with highs in the upper 60s. Central and western South Dakota will climb into the low 70s this afternoon. The wind will hold to about 5 to 15 mph through this afternoon.

The next couple of days will be mild but breezier. High temps will stay in the upper 60s to low 70s with south wind gusts to between 25 and 35 mph both Tuesday and Wednesday.

A powerful fall/winter storm system will move into the region late this week into this weekend. Rain, snow and much colder temperatures are likely. Rain and cold will arrive throughout the day Thursday with rain mixing with and changing to snow Thursday night into Friday. It’s still too early to get specific, but some minor snow accumulation is possible in Sioux Falls and places along and west of I-29. More significant snow accumulation is possible along and west of the James River with even higher amounts possible along and west of the Missouri River. Again, it’s too early to get specific, but accumulating snowfall is very possible across central, western and northern South Dakota.

In addition to the rain and snow, there will be very strong wind gusts and near record cold temperatures. On Friday and Saturday, high temps will only reach the mid to upper 30s with lows dropping into the 20s this weekend.

Stay tuned for updates on this developing storm. We will have the latest and get more specific with potential snow amounts as we get closer.

Cooler, Windy Today… A Nice Week Ahead

A cold front moving across the plains this morning will bring some pretty big changes to our weather today. After a brief shower or thundershower around daybreak, the rest of today will be sunny, breezy, cooler and a lot less humid. High temps will only reach the mid 70s with northwesterly wind gusts in the 25 to 35 mph range throughout the day.

The rest of the work week will be mostly sunny and mild with our next chance of rain arriving by the weekend. Saturday and Sunday will be partly to mostly cloudy and cooler with scattered showers and thunderstorms. High temps will drop into the mid to upper 60s this weekend.

Sunny and Mild Today… A Nice Labor Day Weekend

It’s hard to believe that Labor Day weekend is almost here! Other than clouds and scattered rain Friday night into Saturday morning, the weekend forecast is looking great for the State Fair or anything else you might have going on outdoors.

Today will be sunny and a bit breezy with high temps in the upper 70s. It won’t be as windy as it was Tuesday, but northwesterly wind gusts of 15 to 25 mph are likely throughout the day.

A couple of relatively weak waves of energy will move across our region tomorrow into Saturday and that’s our only hiccup in the holiday weekend forecast. Friday will start with sunshine, but clouds will gradually increase throughout the afternoon. Scattered showers will develop across central South Dakota by mid to late afternoon Friday and move east to Sioux Falls by Friday evening. Scattered rain is likely Friday night with clouds and showers gradually exiting from west to east on Saturday morning.

While there could be a couple of isolated thundershowers, I do not expect severe weather. Rainfall amounts of one-quarter to one-half inch are possible with the heaviest rain falling along and south of the South Dakota/Nebraska state line.

We will see some sunshine on Saturday afternoon but high temps will only reach the low 70s. We’ll do our best to make up for that on Sunday and Monday with plenty of sunshine and highs in the upper 70s to low 80s.

A Sunny, Warm Start to the Week

It is the first week of school for a lot of kids and we are off to a relatively quiet, summery start. Today will be mostly sunny, warm and humid with temperatures ranging from the mid to low low 80s in Sioux Falls to the mid to upper 80s along the James River to the low 90s across central South Dakota. Scattered thunderstorms are possible along the James River late this afternoon into this evening with storms redeveloping along and east of I-29 late this evening and overnight tonight. The overall severe weather threat for later today and tonight is low, however, one or two storms could produce marginally severe hail, straight line wind gusts or even a weak tornado.

After one more warm, humid day tomorrow, cooler air will arrive and take us comfortably through the rest of the week. Wednesday, Thursday and Friday will be mostly sunny with below average high temperatures in the upper 70s to low 80s.

Scattered thunderstorms are back in the forecast for late Friday, Friday night into Saturday morning. After that, the rest of the upcoming weekend is looking good. Saturday and Sunday will be partly cloudy with just a slight chance of a random, isolated thunderstorm. Highs will be slightly warmer – in the low to mid 80s – this weekend.
