About Shawn Cable
Shawn Cable is an Emmy® award-winning meteorologist, anchor, and reporter with a quirky charm and a knack for making weather fun and engaging. After spending more than 25 years on the air in Sioux Falls, SD, at both KELO and KSFY Television, Shawn is thrilled to be Chief Meteorologist at KEYC Television in Mankato, MN, the station he grew up watching.
Shawn’s passion for weather began in his hometown of Morgan, Minnesota. One memorable day while he was a junior in high school, he predicted a storm that blasted his hometown with hailstones the size of canned hams. Earlier that same day, he accepted the very first job of his broadcasting career at “The Polka Station of the Nation” 860, KNUJ radio in New Ulm. This whirlwind moment solidified his dedication to meteorology and set him on the path to a career focused on keeping people safe from storms.
After high school, Shawn ventured west to South Dakota State University (SDSU) in Brookings, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in choral and vocal music. That’s right, music. While still in college, he took a job doing the weather on weekends at KELOLAND television in Sioux Falls, SD. His first weather broadcast was a revelation, sparking a passion for meteorology that led him to pursue further education in broadcast meteorology at Mississippi State University.
While he didn’t choose the musical career path, Shawn still does a lot with music. He has been a featured guest soloist with the South Dakota Symphony Orchestra and the Sioux Empire Brass Society. He performs an annual holiday concert with the Jazzed Up Big Band and is well known for his performances with former White House pianist Erik Apland. Shawn also plays the piano and the accordion.
In addition to his work on television, Shawn’s forecast can be heard on over 70 radio stations across the upper Midwest. Shawn is a proud member of the National Weather Association, where he holds the NWA Broadcast Seal of Approval and chairs the NWA Seal recertification committee. In this role, he collaborates with sealholders nationwide to ensure they receive the continuing education needed to maintain the high standards of the National Weather Association.
When he’s not predicting the next big storm or chasing tornadoes, Shawn loves spending time with his awesome teenage daughter, Norah. He also enjoys downhill skiing, traveling whenever he can, and may play an occasional game of Mario Kart or Fortnite between newscasts.
Shawn’s accolades include two Emmy awards, an Eric Sevareid Award from the Midwest Broadcast Journalists Association, and the AH Pankow award from the South Dakota Governor and the South Dakota Department of Tourism. He has also been twice named “Best Weathercaster in South Dakota” by the Associated Press and has made appearances on “The Late Show with David Letterman,” “The Tonight Show with Conan O’Brien,” “CNN,” “CBS NEWS,” and “The Weather Channel.”
