A Warmer Week Ahead

Get ready for a sunny, mild start to the week. Today will be mostly sunny with high temps ranging from the low 40s in Sioux Falls to the mid to upper 30s across much of South Dakota.

Tonight will be partly cloudy with areas of fog developing toward morning. With temperatures dropping into the teens overnight, the fog will frost the roads.

The rest of the week will be mostly dry and quite a bit warmer than we’ve been for the last week or so. High temps will climb into the low to mid 30s each day.

Extreme southeastern South Dakota and parts of Iowa and Minnesota will get clipped by a system late Wednesday into Thursday. We could get a quick shot of light snow in Sioux Falls on Wednesday night. Parts of southern Minnesota and northwestern Iowa could get some minor accumulation.

Saturday and Sunday are looking good. Both days should be partly cloudy with highs in the upper 30s to low 40s. There is a potential system that could impact the region with rain and then snow late Sunday and Monday. Depending on how that pans out, we might have to tweak Sunday’s forecast a bit. It’s only Monday and a lot could change between now and then. I’ll have updates throughout the week.

Heavy Snow Possible Saturday

Two down, one more on the way. It has been a busy week for snow and the most significant system of the three is on the way.

A Winter Storm Watch is in effect from Saturday morning through Saturday evening and includes Sioux Falls, extreme southeastern South Dakota, much of Minnesota, northwestern Iowa and eastern Nebraska. Snow will develop across central Nebraska late tonight and move northeastward into South Dakota, Iowa and Minnesota on Saturday morning. Snow will be heavy at times with accumulation of 5 to 7 inches possible in Sioux Falls. Parts of Iowa and Minnesota south and east of Sioux Falls could get 6 to 10 inches. This system will have a lesser impact north and west of Sioux Falls. Accumulation of 3 to 5 inches is possible in Huron, Mitchell and Watertown, 2 to 4 inches in Chamberlain, 1 to 3 inches in Aberdeen and about an inch in Pierre.

Wind will be fairly light through most of the day Saturday however, gusts could increase to between 20 and 30 mph on Saturday night in places south and east of Sioux Falls.

Stay tuned for updates. As the system develops we will be able to fine tune the forecast track of the storm and make any necessary adjustments to the snow forecast.

More Snow Today

We have more snow on the way today. A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect for much of the region this afternoon into tonight. Light snow is possible this morning, but the heavier snow will kick in around or shortly after noon today. Most places could get about 2 inches by the end of the day. We could see a little light freezing drizzle mix with the snow at times today. Snow will continue into tonight with an additional 2 inches possible for an overall total of about 2 to 4 inches in Sioux Falls, some places north and west of Sioux Falls could see 4 to 6 inches by the time everything winds down late tonight.

We will get a break from the snow tomorrow and then another system will bring more snow on Saturday. This one could drop another 4 or more inches of snow across eastern South Dakota, Minnesota and northwestern Iowa. Stay tuned for updates on this one. It will impact any travel plans you might have for Saturday into Saturday night.

Winter Storm Details

A complicated winter storm system will bring snow, blowing snow and even some freezing drizzle to the region today, tonight and tomorrow. A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect for much of eastern South Dakota, southwestern Minnesota and northwestern Iowa this evening into tomorrow. A Winter Storm Warning is in effect today and tonight for much of central and western South Dakota.

SNow will come in a couple of rounds. Round one has already developed across much of central and northern South Dakota this morning. Snow will continue to develop and move east throughout the day today. Wind gusts to 25 mph or higher will create areas of blowing snow at times. A second, heavier round of snow is likely tonight into tomorrow morning. In addition to the snow, parts of northwestern Iowa and southern Minnesota could get areas of freezing drizzle today and again tomorrow.

This is a large system that will affect everyone a little differently. Here’s a breakdown detailing the impact on specific parts of our region:

Sioux Falls

WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY IS IN EFFECT FROM NOW THROUGH NOON TUESDAY

Light snow is likely throughout the day today. Accumulation amounts will be less than an inch through this afternoon. Parts of northwestern Iowa will likely have some patchy freezing drizzle throughout the day today. A second, heavier round of snow will roll in tonight. About 2 to 4 inches of accumulation as possible with the second round. Snow will end by noon tomorrow.

Aberdeen/Watertown

WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY IS IN EFFECT FROM 6 PM THROUGH NOON TUESDAY

Light snow is likely today. Around an inch of accumulation as possible. North wind gusts to 25 mph will create areas of blowing snow especially in rural areas. Overall snow accumulation will range from about 3 to 6 inches by the time the snow ends tomorrow morning.

Pierre/Central South Dakota

WINTER STORM WARNING IS IN EFFECT UNTIL 6 AM TUESDAY

Areas of snow and blowing snow are likely today. 2 to 4 inches of accumulation is possible by the end of the day today. A second, heavier round of snow is likely tonight. An additional 4 to 6 inches of accumulation is possible. Snow will end tomorrow morning with total accumulation of 6 to 10 inches.

A Sunny, Warmer Valentine’s Day

After ten straight days of below average high temperatures, we are going to turn up the heat for Valentine’s Day! Today will be mostly sunny with temps climbing into the low 40s this afternoon. I wish I could keep the mild temps around a bit longer, but this heat wave is only going to last a day. A cold front will blast through tomorrow and that means colder temperatures and light snow.

Clouds will increase late tonight with areas of fog and frost possible after midnight. Tomorrow will be cloudy with most places reaching the day’s high by noon. By late tomorrow afternoon, most of the north will drop into the low teens or single digits. Sioux Falls will reach the upper 20s to low 30s by noon tomorrow with temps falling into the teens by 6 pm. Light snow is also possible tomorrow. Most places will only get a dusting, but a few places could get up to an inch.

Cold temperatures will stick around on Friday and then we will warm slightly for the weekend. Saturday and Sunday will be partly to mostly cloudy with high temps in the low to mid 30s. Get ready for more cold and light snow next week. By Monday and Tuesday highs will only reach the upper teens to low 20s.
