Hot, humid weather will continue today. A Heat Advisory is in effect for locations along and south of I-90 this afternoon into this evening. High temperatures will once again soar into the 90s with the heat index approaching 100 to 105 degrees.

A cold front will bring a chance of thunderstorms later today and tonight. A few storms could be severe with hail and strong straight-line wind gusts being the main threat. A bigger concern is the potential for heavy rain. There is a lot of moisture in the air today and storms that develop could produce heavy rainfall amounts of 1 to 2 inches or more. The National Weather Service has issued a Flash Flood Watch for parts of southeastern South Dakota, southwestern Minnesota and northwestern Iowa from this afternoon through Saturday morning.

It is going to be a warm, humid and breezy day. High temps will range from the upper 80s in Sioux Falls to the low to mid 90s across central and northern South Dakota. The dew point will reach the 70s and that will crank the heat index into the upper 90s to near 100 degrees this afternoon. A Heat Advisory is in effect for places along and west of the James River this afternoon.

Thunderstorms will bring more heavy rain to portions of western, central and northeastern South Dakota later today and especially tonight. These storms will move a little faster than the storms that moved through last night, but heavy rainfall amounts of up to an inch or more will still be possible in some places. In addition to the rain threat, some storms could be severe. Large hail and damaging straight-line wind gusts will be the main threat.

The 4th of July will be another hot, humid day with scattered showers and thunderstorms possible tomorrow afternoon and tomorrow night. There will be scattered thunderstorms around fireworks time tomorrow night, especially in Sioux Falls and across the tri-state region. Storms will move in and out rather quickly, though. I’ll keep the fireworks forecast updates coming as we get closer to tomorrow evening.

The front responsible for storms today and tomorrow should push through by Thursday morning, leaving us with a slightly cooler, less humid, absolutely gorgeous weekend. Friday, Saturday and Sunday will bring plenty of sunshine with high temps ranging from the mid 80s to the low 90s.

Thunderstorms will bring heavy rain to southern South Dakota, southern Minnesota, northern Iowa and northern Nebraska today and tonight. The heaviest rain will fall along and south of I-90 with some locations getting 2 to 3 or more inches of rain through tomorrow. the National Weather Service has issued a Flash Flood Watch for locations south of I-90 that is in effect this afternoon through Thursday morning. Sioux Falls, Yankton, Vermilion, Freeman, Sioux City, Sioux Center, Spirit Lake/Okoboji, Spencer, Le Mars and Cherokee are just some of the cities included in the watch.

The rain and clouds will hold temperatures in the upper 60s to low 70s today and tomorrow.

Unfortunately, the driest part of our region will not be getting much rain at all. Most of northern South Dakota will stay dry with high temps in the 80s through the rest of the week.

Our unsettled weather pattern will calm down a little by the weekend. Saturday and Sunday will be partly cloudy with highs in the upper 70s to low 80s, but there will still be a chance of late day and nighttime thunderstorms through the weekend.

Today will be mostly cloudy with scattered showers and thunderstorms, but the weather is looking great for the upcoming weekend.

A system to our south will bring clouds and a chance of showers and thunderstorms this afternoon into this evening. The best chance of rain will be from Sioux Falls to the south and east. As of right now, the severe threat is very low with increasing potential for severe weather south of our KSFY coverage area across portions of Iowa and Nebraska. The wind will be fairly light today with high temperatures reaching the upper 60s this afternoon.

Further north and west there will be more sunshine and that means warmer temperatures. Highs will reach the low to mid 70s across much of central and northern South Dakota today.

After today, it’ll be smooth sailin’ through the weekend. There will be plenty of sunshine with highs in the upper 70s to low 80s on Friday and Saturday, slightly cooler highs in the low to mid 70s by Sunday. The dry, mild weather pattern will continue into early next week.

Another winter storm system will bring rain, freezing rain and snow Tuesday night through Wednesday of this week. Depending on when rain changes to snow, accumulation amounts of 2 to 5 inches or more will be possible in Sioux Falls. Higher amounts are likely across parts of northwest Iowa and southwest Minnesota. Strong wind gusts of 25 to 35 mph will accompany the system, creating areas of blowing snow. A Winter Storm Watch is in effect from Tuesday night through Wednesday evening for extreme southeastern South Dakota and much of northern Iowa and southern Minnesota. Some cities included in the watch: Sioux City, Sioux Center, Rock Rapids, Worthington, Windom, Jackson, and the Lake Okoboji area. Sioux Falls is not included in the watch at this time, but it is right on the western edge. Stay tuned for updates.
