Colder than average temperatures will continue through the rest of the week, the weekend and beyond with several chances of snow this week.

Today will be cloudy with flurries in Sioux Falls and light snow across northern South Dakota. Accumulation will be light with the exception of extreme Northeastern South Dakota. Locations along and north of US Highway 212 (Watertown, Clark, Redfield areas) could get around an inch with slightly higher amounts as you head north. Around an inch or two is possible in Aberdeen with 2 to 3 inches possible along the SD/ND state line. Today will also be cold with high temps only reaching the mid-to-upper single digits.

High pressure will slide across the region tomorrow and that will kick out the clouds and bring on the sunshine. It will stay cold however, with high temps only a few degrees warmer than today.

Our next system will bring about an inch (maybe up to two inches in a few places) of snow late Wednesday night into Thursday morning. Another, slightly stronger system will have the potential to produce 2 to 3 or more inches of snow on Friday.

As of now it looks like the weekend will be mostly dry, but it will be bitterly and dangerously cold. High temperatures will only reach the low single-digits on Saturday and Sunday with morning lows dropping to between 15 and 25 below zero by Sunday morning.

Everywhere I go people keep asking when it’s going to warm up. Unfortunately, I don’t think you’re going to like my answer. Our long-range models are suggesting that the cold will last – it could actually be even colder – through most of next week. There is some hope, however. All of our data is hinting at somewhat warmer temperatures by the end of next week. Stay tuned. I’m on the hunt for warmer temperatures, too and will let you know the moment I have some good news.

A WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY IS IN EFFECT FOR PORTIONS OF EASTERN SOUTH DAKOTA INCLUDING SIOUX FALLS TONIGHT INTO TOMORROW.

A WINTER STORM WARNING IS IN EFFECT FOR EXTREME SOUTHEASTERN SOUTH DAKOTA, SOUTHERN MINNESOTA, NORTHERN IOWA AND NORTHEASTERN NEBRASKA TONIGHT INTO TOMORROW.

Our next system is gearing up and getting ready to bring more snow to the region later today, tonight and tomorrow. Light snow will develop across portions of Central and Southern South Dakota this afternoon and continue to develop and intensify this evening and overnight tonight. Snow will continue tomorrow morning, gradually ending from Southwest to Northeast tomorrow afternoon.

There is quite a bit of moisture feeding into the system and that will help push snowfall amounts into the 5 to 8 inch range across parts of Northwestern Iowa and Southern Minnesota. Amounts will be lighter to the north and west. Sioux Falls, Brookings and Yankton will likely be in the 3 to 6 inch range, Watertown and Mitchell will get slightly less. Huron, Mitchell and Chamberlain could get to 2 to 3 inches with around 2 inches posible in Aberdeen and around an inch or less in Pierre.

While there could be a few gusts to between 15 and 20 mph, the wind should stay fairly light behind this system and that means blowing snow will not be a big issue. That said, visibility could still be reduced during times of heavier snowfall. Roads will also become snow covered and slippery. Once again, snow will end and travel conditions will improve Wednesday afternoon into Wednesday night.

We will get a brief break from the snow on Thursday and then yet another system will bring more snow on Friday with more snow chances through the weekend. Accumulation will be possible this weekend, especially across Southeastern South Dakota, Southwestern Minnesota and Northwestern Iowa. Stay tuned for updates. We are going to kick off the week with yet another round of light snow. Snow will develop across Central South Dakota by mid-morning and move east to the James Valley around lunchtime. Snow will make its way east to I-29 by about mid-afternoon. Snowfall will be relatively light across South Dakota. About an inch or two of accumulation can be expected in most places including the Sioux Falls area.

This system will have a more significant impact to our south and east with heavier snowfall amounts likely across much of Iowa and Minnesota. Marshall, Worthington, Windom, Sioux City and Sioux Center could get 2 to 3 inches while Redwood Falls, St. James, Spirit Lake and Spencer, IA could get 3 to 6 inches. Locations further east could get 6 or more inches of snow. Snow will end from west to east late tonight, lingering into tomorrow morning across parts of Iowa and Minnesota.

By tomorrow morning strong northwesterly wind gusts to 35 mph will kick in and create areas of blowing snow throughout the day. The wind will gradually decrease tomorrow evening.

We will get a brief break from the snow and blowing snow on Wednesday and then another system will bring more snow Thursday into Friday. Another couple of inches will be possible with this one. Stay tuned, we will get more specific with the storm track and snow totals as we get closer.

It’s going to stay cold. Temperatures will reach the low to mid 20s this afternoon and that makes today the warmest day on the 7 Day Forecast. Our colder than average trend will continue through the rest of the week, but I don’t expect extremes like we’ve had the past couple of weeks. High temps will be generally in the teens with lows hovering either side of zero.

The wind will continue to decrease this morning and as that happens travel conditions will gradually improve across the region. Unfortunately the bitterly cold Arctic air will stick around for about another day.

Today will be sunny and cold. High temps won’t even make it above zero in most places. I’m forecasting a high of zero in Sioux Falls. Most of Northern South Dakota will barely get above 10 below zero this afternoon. Even though the wind will decrease to about 5 to 15 mph today, the wind chill factor will hover in the 20 to 30 below zero range tonight into tomorrow morning.

After another cold morning, temperatures will warm back above zero tomorrow afternoon. Saturday will be partly to mostly cloudy with high temps ranging from the upper teens in Sioux Falls and Pierre to the single digits above zero in the north.

Our active weather pattern will pick up again with a chance of light snow on Sunday. Accumulation will be limited to around an inch or so. Yet another system will bring a chance of snow Monday afternoon through Tuesday. The Monday/Tuesday system looks to be a bit more significant with the potential for several inches of snow followed by more strong wind and blowing snow. We’re still several days away from this one. Stay with us for updates throughout the weekend. We’ll fine tune the track and get more specific with possible snowfall amounts as we get closer.

A powerful winter storm system will bring whiteout blizzard conditions and dangerously cold temperatures to much of the region today and tonight making travel extremely dangerous and at times nearly impossible. A Blizzard Warning is in effect for today and tonight and includes Sioux Falls, Aberdeen, Pierre and much of Northeastern and Eastern South Dakota, Southwestern Minnesota and Northwestern Iowa.

While most places will only get an additional inch or two of snow, the several inches of light, fluffy snow already on the ground will combine with strong northwesterly wind gusts of 30 to 40 mph to create whiteout blizzard conditions today and tonight. Temperatures are already below zero this morning and will continue to fall through the day. In addition to creating blowing snow, the wind will drop the wind chill factor to between -30° and -40° later today and tonight. A Wind Chill Advisory is also in effect for much of the region from late tonight through tomorrow morning. The wind will gradually decrease after midnight tonight and travel conditions will improve late tonight into Friday morning.

We will break for some sunshine on Friday and Saturday and then jump back into our active weather pattern with another chance of light snow on Sunday. Yet another system will bring a chance of accumulating snow next Monday into Tuesday. Stay tuned for updates.
